Extracting Files From a Zip Archive |
 |
Putting files in a zip archive is
a great way to minimize downloading time. In some cases it
can compress the size as much as 80%. For versions of Windows
prior to XP there is no inbuilt support for zip archives.
If you are unsure whether you have zip archive support, search your hard drive for
files matching '*.zip'. If you do not have a zip program installed then the icon displayed for files with the
extension .zip will be like that shown to the left.
If your computer does have support for zip archives the icon will correspond to the particular program
you are using. For users of Windows XP the default icon for zip archives will correspond to that on the right.
If you have Windows XP you can explore archive files using Explorer, and may use the normal
drag and drop method for extracting files onto your hard drive. For user's of all other versions of
Windows you can find free utilities by searching your favourite download site.
Many of them employ the drag and drop interface.
You will not be able to view the files correctly while they are still inside the archive file,
even though you can see the file list through Explorer. Before you drag any files from the zip
archive be sure to create a new folder for them to reside in. This new folder should be located
some where convenient, where you will remember it's location.
