Building a System - The Concept

Step 1
Before you begin entering rules at random it make sense to consider a theme or topic on which to base your system. Here are but a few examples:

Step 2
Once you have developed a theme, commence with an empty system and consider carefully the race rules you are about to include and whether they relate to the system as a whole. Consider factors such as where a 3200m Open Hcp race may be suitable for one theme, a 1000m 2YO Set Weight race may not. You may at this point determine that you want to eliminate any race that has one or more runners starting for the first time in a race, or eliminate the heavy tracks. It is most important to consider the race rules as you will discover that when used in conjunction with something known as the RPD (Race Profile Database) will substantially speed up your analysis.

Step 3
Now consider the horse rule most likely to have an impact on the outcome of your analysis. For example if you were considering testing top ranked GTX Rating horses it may be sensible to enter a rule whereby only the top three GTX ranked horses are considered.

Step 4
Before entering any further rules you may wish to analyse the results of the query, sorted by ranking. This would quantify the basic performance of the top ranked horses in terms of profit/loss and percentage of wins/placings, but list separately the top ranked, second ranked and third ranked horses.

Step 5
You would now be armed with some basic information that may indicate that only the top ranked horse should be considered at this stage. You would therefore change the primary rule to consider only the top ranked selection.

Step 6
Now that you have a primary horse rule, consider a next logical step that could, for example be the Rated Price. So, without entering a rule, analyse by GTX Rating Price and run the analysis again. This time it may be evident from the summary results that the GTX Prices of the vast majority of winners were between, say 0.2 and 1.5. You could then enter a rule similar to GTX Price = 0.2 to 1.5

Step 7
Moving right along... once you have developed a sound set of rules that you are happy with, you should consider a System Name, a Unique System ID (maximum 5 characters) and a brief description for your own purposes. Then save the system.

It is essential to allocate a unique 1-5 character ID for every system as results are indexed on the System ID. This is particularly important when running a group of systems.
